A Calcutta Trió Európában, Indiában, valamint a világ számos más pontján lép fel hosszú évtizedek óta. A klasszikus indiai zene mestereivé váltak, annak szülőhazájában is számos elismerést szerezve. A trió fő célja a 3500 éves indiai klasszikus zene tradíciójának, különleges rágáinak, a világ legfejlettebb élő zenei ritmusrendszerének a lehető legtöbb hallgatóval való megismertetése. Az előadásokon a Trió betekintést nyújt az indiai klasszikus zene rendszerébe, történetébe, szigorúan követve indiai mestereiket. Tagjai nagyszerű muzsikusok, akik India legnagyobb mestereitől tanulhattak. A trió 1978 óta havi rendszerességgel tart a maga nemében egyedülálló koncerteket és előadásokat „Indiai Zenei Klub” néven Budapesten, a Marczibányi Téri Művelődési Központban.

Az együttes tagjai:

Kozma András zenei tanulmányait gitáron kezdte, a jazz és a klasszikus zene terén kimagasló eredményeket ért el versenyeken, fesztiválokon, de már gyerekkorától vonzotta az indiai kultúra. Több mint egy évtizeden át élt Indiában, és a világhírű indiai szitárművész, a nemrég elhunyt Pt. Ravi Shankar egyetlen európai tanítványa lehetett. 1987-ben a zenetudományok kandidátusa címet kapta, majd 1988-ban a Ravi Shankar Institute for Music and Performing Arts (RIMPA) európai központjának igazgatója lett. Szintén ismert az indiai filozófia tárgyában tartott előadásairól és több, a tárgyban megjelent könyvéről is. A NASA-nál több évtizede vesz részt az űrhajósok kiképzésében is. 

Szalai Péter zongorán tanult, majd Kurtág György ösztönzésére ütőhangszerekkel kezdett foglalkozni. Az indiai klasszikus zenével a 80-as évek elején ismerkedett meg. 1988-ban Ustad Alla Rakha tanítványa lett – aki India egyik legnépszerűbb tablása és huszonöt éven át Pt.Ravi Shankar kísérője volt –, a mester halála óta pedig fiától, a világhírű tabla-játékostól, Zakir Hussain-től tanulta a tablá és az indiai zene titkait.

A trióban Dr. Molnár András a tanpura nevű kísérőhangszeren játszik, de hosszú indiai tartózkodása alatt a vokális zenével és a tablával is megismerkedett.

Calcutta Trio

Indian classical music belongs to the chamber-music category, where only one soloist is prominent in most cases. The reason why the three Hungarian musicians took the name "Calcutta Trio" is very simple. They have thoroughly learnt Indian classical music for decades, they have been playing together for almost 40 years, and even though they follow their Indian masters faithfully, they had to choose a particular name, just for the sake of identification in our continent. 

Calcutta Trio was founded in 1976 and was established with the aim to make Indian classical music known and popular, played authentically by non-Indians and up until today – not counting their Indian and other foreign performances – held more than 3.000 concerts and lectures in Hungary. Besides the concerts they strived to give an insight to the classical culture of India by giving lectures. The Trio has widely been performing in India, in several Indian cities such as Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Gwalior, as well as in Bangladesh, Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, UAE and Singapore. The Trio has also been performing in various western countries such as Germany, France, Switzerland, Romania, Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia, England and Scotland, the USA, etc. The efforts of the trio led to establishing the first RIMPA (Ravi Shankar Institute for Music and Performing Arts) branch in Budapest, where they teach classical Indian music and work on propagating classical Indian art, as well as produce Indian performances in the region. Since 1979 a weekly Indian Music Club has been existing in Budapest, the only and very first of its type in the continent, where programs, lectures and performances are granted by the Trio.

Andras Kozma

Plays on sitar and he is the only European disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Mr. Kozma is an active member of several Indian music related societies and got his Ph.D. in 1987. Since 1989 Mr. Kozma is the director of RIMPA (Ravi Shankar Institute for Music and Performing Arts) in Budapest, where the Central European Branch was inaugurated by late Pt. Ravi Shankar in 1990. For long years he was a music producer at the Hungarian Radio, where he introduced Indian and other Asian musical systems to the listeners. He is also known as a lecturer and author of Indian philosophy and he has been working part time for NASA, where he lectures and teaches the astronauts on special mental excercises.

Peter Szalai

Tabla player, a student of the world famous tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha. He strictly follows the Punjab gharana of tabla. He has habitually played visited India and also received training from his Guru's sons, namely Zakir Hussain, Fazal Qureshi and Toufiq Qureshi, too. Peter is the dy.director of RIMPA.

Andras Molnar

Has also been a pupil of the late maestro Ustad Munnu Khan from whom he learnt to play the tabla. In the Trio he regularly plays the tanpura.
