Gauri Shankar Gupta egy rádzsasztháni kis faluban, Adzsitgarhban született. Gyermekkorát falusi környezetben töltötte, egyetemi diplomáját közgazdaságtanból szerezte. Tudományos pályafutása alatt Gupta megannyi aranyérmet és kiváló érdemrendet szerzett, s tagja az Institute of Company Secretaries of India-nak. 
A magánszektorban eltöltött három év után, 1981-ben csatlakozott az indiai külügyi szolgálathoz. Azóta különféle hivatali minőségeket töltött be Belgiumban, Bangladesben, Bahreinben, Mexikóban, Franciaországban és a Fülöp-szigeteken. Franciaországi kiküldetése alatt az UNESCO Végrehajtási Tanácsának póttagja volt, 2003 júniusától 2006 szeptemberéig pedig Mongólia indiai nagyköveteként szolgált. 2006 októberétől 2010 februárjáig India Külügyminisztériumának adminisztrációs főosztályvezetőjeként dolgozott. 2010-2013 között Magyarország és Bosznia-Hercegovina indiai nagykövete volt. írással és költészettel is foglalkozik.

Könyvét, „Mongolia: The Land of Blue Skies” (Mongólia: A kék égbolt földje) a Roli Books gondozásában 2007-ben adták ki Indiában. Később megjelent két verseskötetét, a „Droplets”-t (Cseppek), valamint a „Chand Lamhe”-t az újdelhiben működő Star Publication jelentette meg. 2008 és 2010 között Gupta több cikket is írt külpolitikai, valamint ehhez kapcsolódó témákban, s több konferencián is elnökölt. Negyedik könyve, Az élet rejtélyeinek feltárása 2012-ben jelent meg. A könyvben a szerző az emberi élet alapvető kérdéseire keresi a választ  mind a modern tudomány, mind az ősi bölcsesség szempontjából.A könyv világszerte nagy sikert aratott és azóta számos nyelvre lefordították (magyar, cseh, román, hindí, spanyol, indonéz). 

Gauri Shankar Gupta folyékonyan beszél angolul, franciául és spanyolul. Több mint 70 országban járt már szerte a világban.

Born in small town of Ajitgarh in the State of Rajasthan, India on July 15, 1956, Gupta spent his childhood in a rural milieu. He did well in his academic career and was awarded several gold medals and scholarships. After completion of Masters in Management, Gupta served in banking sector for three years before joining Indian Diplomatic Service in 1981.

As part of his diplomatic assignments, Gupta served in Indian Missions in Belgium, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Mexico, France and the Philippines in different capacities. In France he also served as Deputy Permanent Delegate of India to UNESCO and as an Alternate Member of the UNESCO’s Executive Board. Subsequently he served as India’s ambassador to Mongolia, Hungary and Bosnia & Herzegovina and as High Commissioner of India to Trinidad and Tobago, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada and Montserrat.

Gupta is a writer and a poet. His books include Mongolia: The Land of Blue Skies, Droplets and Chand Lamhe, the last two being on poetry. His fourth book Unraveling Mysteries of Life – Modern Science and Ancient Wisdom published in 2012, is based on extensive research on fundamental issues of human life both from the perspective of modern science and the ancient wisdom. The book has received excellent reviews around the world and has been translated and published in Hungarian, Czech, Romanian, Hindi, Spanish and Bhasha Indonesia. Publication of this book in some other languages is also underway.

Gupta has also contributed many articles on foreign policy and spiritual issues. His latest articles include Science and Spirituality, Swami Vivekananda and Religious Harmony and Defining God – A Vedic Interpretation published by the World Congress of Faiths in their journal ‘Interreligious Insight’ Vedic Knowledge World Peace and Sustainable Development published elsewhere. Gupta has presided over a large number of academic conferences and seminars and has participated in many international conferences. On September this year Gupta will be making an opening address at an international conference on ‘Spirituality and Economic Development’ at The Art Institute of Chicago, US. Some of his talks and speeches are available at YouTube – gaurishankargupta100 and at his web page ‘gaurishankargupta.com’. Gupta has travelled widely to over 90 countries. He speaks Hindi, English, French and Spanish.

The following international honours have been bestowed on Mr. Gupta:

1. Ambassador of the Club of Budapest.
2. Amicus Curiae Medallion by the President of the Curia, Hungary.
3. Hungarian Government offered to confer Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (Civil Division).
4. Kabir Samman by Adharsila World Hindi Meet 2013.
5. Silver Star of Peace by the Mongolian Foundation for Peace & Friendship.
6. Award for Selfless Service by Inter-religious Organization of Trinidad and Tobago.
